Dr. Fritz Klein, the accomplished and celebrated American sex researcher,
psychiatrist, and bisexual activist passed away on the morning of Wednesday, May
24th at his San Diego, California home after suffering a heart attack. He had
also been fighting pancreatic cancer.
While Klein was most noted for his research and scholarly work on sexuality,
his legacy goes far beyond the academic realm. He used his endless capacity and
determination to break new ground in activism and touch lives personally as a
psychiatrist.
Some of his most prominent work included The Klein Sexual Orientation Grid, a
multi-dimensional system that built upon Kinsey's sexuality scale and
establishing the American Institute of Bisexuality, which later grew into The
Bisexual Foundation.
An accomplished writer, he founded and edited the Journal of Bisexuality. In
1993 his book "The Bisexual Option" was published, adding a crucial voice to
courses on sexuality. He poured himself into his more personal works, such as
"Bisexual & Gay Husbands: Their Words, Their Stories" and his last book, "Life,
Sex, and the Pursuit of Happiness."
For a community that is often misunderstood and far too often dismissed, he
created the scientific research and resolve to help confirm what so many
bisexuals always knew to be true.
